The U.S. Department of Energy says heat gain and heat loss through windows cause 25% to 30% of the energy a home uses for heating and cooling. ENERGY STAR says upgrading to ENERGY STAR certified windows lowers household energy bills by an average of 12%.
The two ratings on every window
Every window we quote comes with two numbers for its glass.
The first, the U-factor, tells you how fast heat passes through a window. The lower the U-factor, the less heat gets through. ENERGY STAR says to choose a low U-factor for all windows in warmer climates, because in addition to cutting heat loss, a low U-factor also reduces your need for cooling.
The second number on our quotes is the solar heat gain coefficient, or SHGC, a rating for how much of the sun's heat gets through the glass. The lower the number, the less heat comes in. For homes in the South, ENERGY STAR says to look for an SHGC of 0.23 or less.
ENERGY STAR says a standard double-pane window lets in about 75% of the sun's heat. It says most ENERGY STAR certified windows cut that heat more than typical windows do, without cutting the daylight.
Which sides of your house need it most
ENERGY STAR says a low SHGC is important on windows that face south, east and west in warmer climates. It says the SHGC matters less on north-facing windows, because they don't get much direct sun.
So when we quote a Carrollton house, we look at each wall. We put the lowest SHGC glass on the walls that take the most sun. ENERGY STAR also says that in hot climates it works well to shade south-facing windows generously. It says trees that lose their leaves in fall give shade in summer when planted near south, east and west windows, and let the sun's heat in during winter.
Fading and comfort
ENERGY STAR says the coatings on certified windows act like sunscreen for your house. It says they cut fading of floors, drapes and photos by up to 75%, without noticeably reducing the daylight.
Fitting matters as much as the glass
ENERGY STAR says even the best windows can let air leak in if they are poorly installed. It also says some manufacturers will void your warranty if the installer doesn't follow their installation instructions. We follow the maker's instructions on every window we fit, and we seal the gap between the new window and the wall.
ENERGY STAR says that if you add up all the hidden air leaks in a home, they can equal a hole the size of an open window.
What to get in writing
Ask for these in writing, whoever you hire:
- The exact U-factor and SHGC of each window, written into the contract.
- A line saying the windows are ENERGY STAR certified for where you live.
- A price split into labor and materials. ENERGY STAR suggests asking for this, and says certified windows may cost more than others, but the labor should be about the same for both.
Questions about energy-efficient windows in Carrollton
What makes a window energy-efficient?
On the windows we fit, it comes down to the two glass ratings and a good seal around the frame. We choose the glass for each wall and fit the window tight to the opening.
Why is there water on the outside of my new windows?
On a hot, humid day, ENERGY STAR says the cool air inside your house can cool the outside of the glass enough for water to form on it.
Are triple-pane windows worth it in Carrollton?
We look at the U-factor and SHGC of the whole window, not the number of panes. We'll show you the ratings side by side so you can see what you get for the extra cost.
Do I need a permit to replace windows in Carrollton?
Not if the new windows are the same size as the old ones. The City of Carrollton says a permit is needed if the size of the opening changes. We tell you before we start if your job changes any opening.
Can I just replace the windows on the hot side of the house?
Yes. We can start with the west and south walls and do the rest later.
